The island was first discovered by Europeans in 1788. Before this is was unknown to even indigenous peoples  of the surrounding areas. Realistically, that does not seem to absurd when you consider that it take a two hour flight from mainland Australia to get you to the island.

The island effectively operates as a national park. Its tourism is extremely limited. Only 400 tourists are allows to visit the island at a time. Combined with the total estimate population of  slightly over 350 individuals, a total of just under 800 people are allowed on the island at one given time; The island is very small.

The limits on human habitants and tourism on the island is to protect the numerous endemic species and the amazing natural beauty of the island. This island is a paradise for the outdoor enthusiast!
